Artificial Intelligence was the theme of the 10th edition of Media in Piazza 2025 (MiP), which took place from April 14 to 17 at the LaFilanda library in Mendrisio. Over 350 students and teachers (around 20 classes) benefited from the program this year. Therefore Wikimedia CH and Amnesty International (Ticino) commissioned new media artists to create an interactive A.I.-based art installation that made the workshop topic “Data, A.I.-training and Biases” accessible to students in an artistic way.
The project by Janiv Oron and Niculin Barandun addresses these aspects by exploring the interactions between human identity and the digital world. It examines how digital technologies influence our identities and can contribute to marginalization. The fragmented and non-linear soundscapes enhance the emotional impact and challenge perception. An interactive installation in which visitors see themselves in a digital mirror through which they are transported into scenes generated on the basis of Wikipedia articles.
We’re gently combing through Wikipedia articles to collect meaningful bits, titles, images, and stories, like picking threads from a vast fabric of knowledge. These threads are woven into a kind of invisible landscape (a latent space), where similar ideas live near each other, letting you wander through concepts like walking through a dreamworld of connected thoughts.
The work encourages reflection on preserving our democracy and identity formation in the digital context, posing questions such as: What defines a person in the digital space? The project is structured into three areas: “I,” “The Others,” and “Environment,” providing a comprehensive exploration of digital identity and its societal implications. By merging personal reflection with collective knowledge, this installation creates a space for contemplating the complex relationship between identity, digital technology, and the vast repository of human knowledge that the Wikipedia platform represents.
